Curiouser and curiouser, and not just in Wonderland

For all the extensive commentary after the Budget announcement on Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) no one appears to have stepped forward and claimed credit for forecasting such a curious and unexpected change to the tax thresholds. The SDLT exemption for certain first time buyers of property priced below £250,000 amounts to no more than, at best, a saving of £2,500 at a time when many mortgage lenders continue to require an equivalent deposit of £50-60,000! The higher rate of 5.00% SDLT on purchases over £1m does not come into effect until April 2011 and other than causing a rush of completions close to that deadline date this is unlikely to alter demand for up market homes.
